Cancun, Sprinboard to the Yucatan

Ask someone where Cancun, Mexico is and it's very likely they will know. The name has become a household word, but it was not always so.
Two years ago our niece was performing with a dance company in Merida (Yucatan), a town of roughly a million people that is located about 200 miles west of Cancun. We were at our home in Puerto Morelos and looked into flying from Cancun to Merida.
I don't remember the exact cost, but at the time it was more money than we wanted to spend, and we would have had to change planes in Mexico City, which is more than a little out of the way, so we opted for a bus ride from Cancun.
Checking now, I see that many more flights are available to Merida directly from Cancun and are very affordable. In fact, if you're coming from outside the country and going to anywhere in the Yucatan Peninsula, save Campeche, it's likely that your first stop will be the Cancun airport.
Campeche is a very historic city and a fun visit, but for plane travel, it's kind of off the beaten path.
All flights that I have found to go there, whether from Cancun or somewhere in the U.S., are routed through Mexico City and involve big layovers, resulting in travel times ranging from sixteen to twenty-four hours each way. Yikes!
So if you want to get there inexpensively and see the countryside, a bus ride from Cancun gets you there and back, at least, in this season (October, 2017), for under $40 U.S. and does so in under seven hours each way.
Of course, besides the big public transportation companies like ADO, there are private tour companies who either have their own busses or contract with bus companies to sell you both a bus ticket and a tour package.
These are often ideal for folks taking a quick vacation who want to see some marvel like the ruins of Chichen Itza, getting there and back quickly and efficiently with a built in tour guide.
I used to love to drive, but living here in Mexico has cured me of that. On the way to Merida my wife and I played a couple games of Scrabble and chatted about the view, which is mostly lots and lots of jungle.
In Merida there was a bus station just a block from the hotel that we booked, so we didn't even require a taxi. Public transportation has become a way of life for us when we're here.
So if you're interested in visiting Playa del Carmen, Merida, Progresso, Campeche, Chetumal, Chichen Itza, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, Xcaret, Tulum, Izamal, Uxmal, Xel-Ha, Coba, Valladolid or any of the other natural or man-made wonders of this magical place, odds are you'll be bouncing off that springboard, Cancun.
Give us a little wave as you pass through.
